Beautiful Bizarre Interview

June 13, 2019 Courtney Brims
01.jpeg

“A cornucopia of native wildlife. Courtney Brims is an artist who wholly celebrates personal connections to nature, especially within the Australian landscape. She goes beyond the mere surface, exposing the intimate, mysterious aspects of the hidden world that is usually relegated to the periphery. Her illustrations are reminiscent of a magical realist dream, a place where imagination takes precedence within the backdrop of the real world. We only need to look at Courtney’s work to become reconnected with our child-like mind, the one that finds beauty and playfulness in the everyday that surrounds us. Her subjects are often new sorts of creatures: cats with tails of flowers and insects as petals.

Courtney also depicts the reality of the natural cycle to the point where everything becomes physically and spiritually entwined within her work. Through this, she explores a sort of animalistic vanitas; wherein birds perch on bones and mice live in skulls. In this way, Courtney is able to simultaneously contrast the energy of peak life against the stagnation of the end. To me, Courtney embodies a very special sort of meditation within her artistry – a freedom to be curious. Her artworks can be very surprising. I challenge any reader to find the hidden motifs within her detailed drawings. Her mastery of camouflage is akin to Mother Nature’s own talent.

Ultimately, Courtney Brims is one of those rare artists who can create new perspectives, and who inspires us to look beyond and beyond until we ourselves are reborn. It’s more than a call to nature; it’s a call to becoming.” - Andrea Kovacic

New collaboration with the wonderful folk at Mineheart!

“Mineheart has gone even further to reduce the environmental impact of their wallpapers with the launch of their “Back to Nature” range of wallpapers for which they re-designed even the packaging to use with 100% biodegradable plastic-free materials, even going as far as eliminating the use of plastic tape and polythene wrap.

The artwork has been designed by Courtney Brims, known for her beautifully detailed drawings and illustrations of animals where nothing is quite what it seems. In this design snakes, rats, snails, skeletons and moths adorn the classical flowing vines and flowers.

The 'Back to Nature' wallpaper collection resonates with nature in both its design and making. This wall-covering is printed on minehearts standard wallpaper using pulp from sustainably managed forests, with ultra low VOC inks and for every roll sold, one additional tree is planted in areas of Africa heavily affected by deforestation.”

Leadbeater's Possum

March 20, 2018 Courtney Brims

‘The tiniest and most controversial possum on earth, the Leadbeater’s Possum, is going extinct. The possum and the forest in which it lives has been IUCN red-listed and rated ‘critically endangered’ on account of the threat of logging and fires. The Leadbeater’s Possums last population stronghold are the Mountain Ash forests of the Central Highlands, it’s lowland population in Yellingbo has only 36 animals surviving, sadly nest boxes didn’t work and it’s been deemed functionally extinct. The possum is found nowhere else on the planet and has come up against the giant Japanese paper company Nippon Paper and its pulp log contracts to make its signature paper product Reflex White.’ - Great Forest National Park.
.
To lend your support, do not buy Reflex White copy paper, support the Great Forest National Park and donate to Friends of Leadbeater's Possum! You can also purchase my Aus fauna and flora cards via my online shop that help to support this wonderful organisation.
